Biden Administration Extends TPS for El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela

Immigration Updates

On January 10, 2025, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announced the administration would extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Salvadoran, Sudanese, Ukrainian and Venezuelan immigrants who currently have TPS. The TPS program for El Salvador will be extended through March 2026, while the designations for Sudan, Ukraine and Venezuela will be extended through October 2026. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) estimates this will benefit roughly 234,000 Salvadorans, 1,900 Sudanese, 104,000 Ukrainians, and 600,000 Venezuelans living in the United States. Salvadoran, Sudanese, Ukrainian and Venezuelan immigrants who currently have TPS may now renew their work permits and TPS status through March or October 2026, depending on their country of origin.

The incoming Trump administration has indicated it intends to curtail or eliminate TPS. As TPS for a given country can only be terminated after 60 days from a notice issued by the DHS Secretary or when the current TPS period ends, whichever is later, DHS’s extension of status for El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela will protect the designation for current TPS holders from those countries through 2026.
