Litigation & Research Fellow

Van Der Hout LLP is a nationally renowned, full-service immigration and nationality law firm located in San Francisco’s Union Square. The firm was founded in 1980, and it represents a wide range of clients in immigration matters, including family-based immigration, employment-based immigration, asylum and other humanitarian relief, removal defense, and federal litigation. We are immigrants’ rights, civil rights, and public interest oriented, with twelve attorneys and 34 total staff.

We are seeking a licensed attorney with one to three years of experience, or a recent law graduate, to serve as a Litigation & Research Fellow for a term of two years. The Fellow will work directly with partners and associate attorneys on a multitude of immigration cases, including deportation defense, federal court litigation, family, asylum, naturalization, and the intersection of criminal and immigration law. Our work is done in a variety of forums, such as the Immigration Courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, USCIS, ICE, CBP, and the federal courts, both at the district court and the appellate court levels. The Fellow will work closely with attorneys in the firm, handling primarily legal research and writing in support of litigation and other advocacy in a cutting edge, diverse and complex immigration law practice.

We are looking for someone who is interested in working and learning in a cutting-edge, diverse, and complex immigration law practice. We continue to value in-person relationships and collaboration. This is therefore a hybrid position. Attorneys are expected to come into the office on a regular basis.

Qualifications

  • Experience in/knowledge of immigration law strongly preferred.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability and interest in taking on complex and difficult immigration cases.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish preferred.
  • Interest in fast-paced, energetic work environment.
  • Admission in a State Bar preferred.
  • Start date flexible – Fall 2024

Salary range is $80,000 to $90,000.

Legal Administrative Assistant

The position is in-office, and will assist a team of attorneys and paralegals with a wide variety of administrative tasks. Ideal candidate must be detailed oriented; possess excellent organizational and time management skills; proficient in using Word, Excel, and Adobe. We work in a warm collegial environment, and provide competitive salaries and generous benefits. Business/Employment Immigration Paralegal

Van Der Hout LLP is a nationally renowned, full-service immigration and nationality law firm located in San Francisco's Union Square. The firm was founded in 1980, and it now has 37 staff (attorneys, paralegal and admin support). It represents clients in a wide range of immigration matters.

The firm is seeking to fill a paralegal position for its expanding employment and family-based immigration practice. The paralegal will assist attorneys in preparation of non-immigrant and immigrant visa petitions, and Labor Certification/PERM applications.  The paralegal may also prepare applications for adjustment of status and naturalization.

The successful candidate must be able to work with moderate supervision and guidance in reviewing case documents and preparing employment based immigration applications for filing with various government agencies.   

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Preparing of non-immigrant and immigrant visa petitions, including PERM Labor Certifications, Adjustment of Status and Naturalization
  • Manage status of cases filed applications and petitions
  • Communicate with clients, witnesses, foreign nationals regarding procedural and case processing issues
  • Review and approve client billing (under supervision of attorney)
  • Run reports to monitor deadlines
  • Oversee status of cases using case management and billing systems.  
  • Calendaring deadlines, and reminders
  • Write declarations

Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of experience at an immigration law firm, preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or Paralegal Certificate
  • Strong Organizational skills
  • Excellent English Skills (Written and Verbal)
  • Interest in Human Rights and Immigration matters
  • Computer Literacy
  • Customer Service Skills
  • Proficiency with Case Management Software and other reporting tools and technologies used to manage data and information

Law Clerk

Van Der Hout LLP is accepting applications for the law clerk positions on a rolling-basis. The positions will remain open until filled. We hire law clerks year-round. The positions are paid. Specific starting and ending dates can be arranged as necessary.  

Applicants should have completed their first year of law school. This is primarily a hands-on case-specific position. Law clerks will work with attorneys on specific cases to help prepare filings before United States Citizenship and Immigration Services or before the Executive Office for Immigration Review. The law clerk will be involved in case work such as preparing declarations with clients, collecting client documents, putting together case filings, and assisting with other projects as needed. 

Required experience: Completion of Immigration Law course or prior immigration law experience. Experience working with clients in a legal setting is a plus.
