Restrictions on Birthright Citizenship Temporarily Blocked
On January 23, 2025, a U.S. District Court judge issued a temporary restraining order stopping the government from enforcing or implementing key sections of President Trump’s executive order on birthright citizenship. The case is State of Washington, et. al. v. Donald Trump, et al., 1/23/25. The judge’s order reads, in part: “There is a strong likelihood that Plaintiffs will succeed on the merits of their claims that the Executive Order violates the Fourteenth Amendment and Immigration and Nationality Act.”

Numerous states and various advocacy organizations have also filed legal challenges. We will continue to monitor this closely in the weeks ahead.
