Helen joined Van Der Hout LLP in June 2018.  Prior to joining the firm, Helen was a Managing Immigration Attorney and Supervisor of the Children's Program at Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto.  In that capacity, Helen provided pro bono representation for individuals, families, and children in removal proceedings.  She also assisted clients with affirmative U visa, VAWA, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, adjustment of status, and asylum applications.  She specialized in representing unaccompanied children and juvenile justice-involved youth.  She advised criminal defense attorneys on the immigration consequences of criminal convictions and represented individuals who were placed in deportation proceedings after contact with law enforcement.  Helen managed a team of immigration attorneys, fellows, paralegals, volunteers, and a social worker.  She also provided mentorship and training for pro bono attorneys, and presented at MCLEs on a variety of topics related to removal defense and the representation of immigrant children.

Helen received her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2011.  As a law student, Helen participated in the Immigration & Refugee Clinic and the Domestic Violence/Family Law Clinic.  She interned at the Global Justice Center in New York and the Center for Reproductive Rights in D.C., and served as an Executive Editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender.
